Short review of Kate Spade Spring 2012: Playful Prints in Colorful Dress Collections
If you’re not already familiar with Broadhurst, you should definitely Wikipedia her–like now. Born in Australia in 1899, Broadhurst travelled the world first as a singer, then a comedienne, before settling briefly in Shanghai where she set up a finishing school for girls. From there she went on to live in England and Australia, marry twice, found the Florence Broadhurst Wallpaper company–which became known for it’s striking, hand-painted prints, and build an accomplished oeuvre as a landscape artist, only to be found murdered at the age 78 in 1977. (See, we told you it was interesting).
Along with using Broadhurst’s famous prints, Llyod also envisioned a collection that would follow the plot of the artist’s roller coaster life from her first cruise around South East Asia as a singer, to the finishing school in Shanghai to her later time in England. Some of the highlights include a rolled magazine clutch (which Lloyd said she envisioned Broadhurst reading aboard the cruise ship) as well as a playful take on schoolgirl style, complete with a neon satchel and a shirt, paired with a smart skirt, that said “Eat Cake for Breakfast.”
Lloyd’s ability to inject fun into every last detail was seen in the white polka dot green dress that up close actually revealed itself to be covered in pale tennis balls. It’s stuff like this–combined with the brand’s classic, feminine silhouettes–that always keeps us (and celebrities like Brad Goreski and Alexis Bledel) coming back for more.
